Welcome back to a brand new school year!! This 21st century bunch has already been hard at work... learning and growing as third graders! Through hands-on experiences, small group practice, whole group collaboration, and, of course lots of technological tools thrown in there, we are making each day a new learning opportunity. I encourage you to ask your child about what they have been up to. What book are they reading (or listening to) in class? Have they earned any certificates on TenMarks? What experiment did they do that Friday? What goal are they working on? We earn "brag tags" for personal achievements. We only give out a few every Monday, but it's positive recognition for a personal challenge they've met or something wonderful they have accomplished.
Thanks so much for sharing your children with me!! Third grade is going to be a challenging journey, but it's a trip we'll take together :)
Here we are a week before Christmas and still hard at work!! Looking at these excited reactions, you would never know they were doing complicated coding! Through this process, they are building spatial relationships, following directions, improving their cognitive thinking (to name a few)... all while practicing real world skills. WOW!
We are gearing up for another great year in room 306! We are already hard at work growing as learners :)
In case you missed our open house, I am including the Prezi that I went over (which is like a creative cousin to the PowerPoint :)
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (and if you haven't signed up for Class Messenger, please do so from our Home page!!)
It might be the day before school lets out for the summer, but we sure aren't slowing down! We did our gallery walk today featuring our nonfiction boards that we did from Discovery Education. Each child chose a different animal to research and report about. They turned out WONDERFUL! Ask your child to show you theirs :) Or if you want to see an example of one, you can view Trey's Bobcat Board here.
Also, if you haven't already, check out Tales2Go's latest blog post featuring... US! Yahoo! I will post the link to the informational video when I get word from Tales2Go that it is published. Can't wait to spread our audiobook love with the world!! Thanks so much for an amazing year. Wherever your travels (or redistricting) takes you next,,, Good luck! Have a great summer!
The students and I have found our new true love... AND it's math (believe it or not!) TenMarks is a new online math program that we've been using in class. I know what you're thinking, "Another online program?" But this one is different. It combines the best features from all of the math programs we love, into one place. It has tutorial videos that walk the children step by step through the problem. It gives hints and second chances for the kiddos to get the right answer. I can assign questions based on the performance I see in class and adjust their track accordingly. Based on the data I get from this program, I am able to pull small groups for remediation or enrichment. The students can earn game time (their favorite) for every 6 assignments (motivation!!) Check out this video to learn more: TenMarks: Students love it
More information about how to login at home will be sent with your child. This is a GREAT summer option too!!
WOW! It is as if the holidays have arrived early for us! We just received our shipment of 13 chromebooks and the Tales2Go audiobook program is up and running (courtesy of my $2500 Dollar General Youth Literacy grant, click here to read the link from the Havelock News if you haven't already :)! For those of you not already familiar with Tales2Go, it is a program that streams thousands of high-interest audiobooks. Kids can listen whenever or wherever they want! I have used this program in the past and have seen wonderful results with it. Students' fluency and visualization skills seem to be positively impacted the most. Common Core standards elevates listening to a key skill separate from speaking and reading. What better way to work on listening skills than audiobooks? They are able to focus on the plot and visualize the story as it is being told. As you can tell, Tales2Go is a program I really believe in! Tales2Go will be mixed in with our daily reading procedures. It isn't the ONLY independent reading exposure the students have, but it is yet another 21st century tool in their toolbox that will help them to learn and grow as readers :) Better yet, they can access this program at home too (the students have their login for this).
What a wonderful start to a new school year! The kids have been learning and growing TONS already! I can't wait to see what adventures are in store for this year :)
I can't believe it is our LAST week of school already! WOW! It seems like just yesterday I was staring at all those tiny little faces on the very first day. We are a little taller, a whole lot smarter, and we're front page newsworthy (meaning our egos are slightly larger as well :) We certainly have had a jammed packed year full of excitement! We end our year with our garden party Wednesday featuring veggies that we grew ourselves!
Thanks to our parents for all of the help and support on the home front! Don't forget, all of the online resources we used in school this year will continue to be available throughout the summer (myON, Study Island, Front Row, etc.). Encourage your student to use these online tools regularly in order to make sure they are prepared for fourth grade! Few more days of fun and learning left to go and then... they're all yours :)
