Also, please make sure your child is reading and summarizing every night. They should read for about 30 minutes and then write in their purple journal folders about what was read. They can write about the character traits of the main character, theme, plot, sequence of events, make a connection to another book/event/life experience, summarize the beginning, middle, and end etc. A weak area however is being able to support their answers with evidence from the text. In other words, they should use what the author says to further explain or support their answers (ex. "I know this because in the story the author says..."). These summaries don't have to be long; they are meant for me to see that the children are reading and understanding what is read.
